Is this the definition of "big government"?

It now has a staff of more than 230, including more than 20 linguists, and an annual budget of $24 million.

24 million dollars of taxpayer money to tell people what they're allowed to say in French.

Yeah the "language police" is insane in Quebec. You can get into big trouble with people for saying anything in English. I've had an earful more than once for saying "hi" instead of "bonjour" just when ordering fast food. But that was a long time ago.

You'll occasionally get people who are really snooty about it. My Québécois friends have had experiences where they spoke in English, had someone behind them in line complain in French at the Anglophones invading and destroying Quebec culture, and then my friends would switch back to perfect French to tell them off. This happened in Montreal, of all places.

Probably banned from French menus I would guess.

There's also a ban on store and restaurant names in English. They have to be made French.

KFC for example is actually known as PFK in Quebec.

We used to go snowmobiling in Canada every year when I was younger near this town called Elk Lake in Ontario (I think?). I got split from the group one time and was completely fucking lost in the woods. I ended up seeing some french cross country skiier and tried to stop and ask for directions. Mind you it's getting dark, I'm 14, and I just read Hatchet in school. I'm fucking in tears scared to death, and this fucking cock mongler just basically brushed me off and ignored me. Ever since then I've hated every last french Canadian.

They've had two referendums before. Separatists make a not-insignificant portion of their politicians, but they're laughed at by the rest of the country.

They came very close in 1995. 49.42%
yes, 50.58% no

French Canadians became extremely racist after that. They blamed immigrants and Anglophones. I was bullied at school for years because I spoke English as a first language. I often had people tell me or my family that we should "go back home to our country" and stop stealing jobs. My friend alarmist got beat up at school because she spoke English.

I don't think it was after 1995... more like in the 70s when Levesque was elected.

I know someone who was there at the time and she used to always go to the same post office. A couple of days after Levesque got elected she went to that same post office she always went to but all of a sudden the people who always spoke english to her now refused to speak english and would only adress her in french

Well it didn't start in 1995. But it got very tense during and after the referendum.

No one in Canada can stand Quebeccers. I used to work for a french canadian company that owned some buildings in Alberta and they would treat any english employees like shit. Hell. Whenever they needed renovations to be done, instead of hiring local contractors from Alberta, they would ship over french contractors from the other side of the country and fund their full stay for months at a time and yet they would hold off on giving raises to their employees for budgetary reasons. Fuck they even stopped supplying coffee for budget reasons.

Message to French Canadian separatists: It is the 21st Century. The world has moved on. Quebec has been a part of what would be Canada since long before Confederation. Get over it. You will never be your own country.

Some TV reporter got fired a few days ago in Quebec because while they were talking about gun control he said he wish they could go hunt down separatists. The head of the separatist party said something like "imagine if instead of separatists he said black people, women or muslims. He would've been fired already." So the TV station fired him.

Yeah Montreal is much more cosmopolitan

My elderly italian mom used to complain that there were too many arabs in Quebec because she saw them all the time at Costco and that soon we would be living under sharia law

So I took her to the Costco in St-Jerome where everyone is a white quebecer and she found herself reassured that white people still exist

But then again my mom is racist
