why do retail/fast food jobs fire people for calling out even once

seems like a great way to have people coming in sick or perpetually under-trained

i was hangry and went to dairy queen, my chicken strips are cold and i'm super mad at the whole idea of the fast food industry right now
Honestly I've wondered this as well. Maybe there wouldn't be so much turnover if they didn't treat employees like s***.

i worked fast food for 3 months then decided getting 7.25$/hr wasn't worth getting treated like literal s***, i already get enough of that from my family

You let one person call out and soon half the staff is taking advantage. Just one of those things that has to get nipped in the bud.
Hmm, I've worked at a lot of food related places and never saw this.

Although I will say bosses don't give a s*** about that.

My job was the exact opposite and it actually infuriated me. In the three years I've been there, they've had many employees who would call in at least once or twice a week, and it screwed up schedules. Yet they wouldn't get rid of them until the rest of the employees started complaining.

I wish that was the case.

People get away with murder in an understaffed restaurant.

Because employers don't see their employees as people.

I worked in an office, and my boss gave me s*** for calling in sick when I literally couldn't walk.

Yeah I'd much rather have some dude with the flu handling my food and working instead of being a lazy b**** and eating soup at home.

lolwat? At my place the rule is if you give an 8 hour notice, no write-up. Under and you can be written up, but you honestly have to be a f***-up or always call out for that to threaten your employment.

At my restaurant you basically have to cuss out a customer/higher up or do no-call/no-shows to get fired, and people who do no-calls kinda deserve it. I mean just lie if you're not gonna come in.

I've worked at places like that. Single mothers were the worst. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt at first, but you're definitely using your kid as a crutch when you call in twice a week.

8 hours seems a bit extreme. 1-2 hours would be more reasonable.

Pro-union workers questioned food safety at Jimmy John's, linking it to sick leave. In early 2011, they put up posters displaying two identical Jimmy John's sandwiches, with one described as made by a healthy worker, the other by a sick one. "Can't tell the difference?" the poster said. "That's too bad because Jimmy John's workers don't get paid sick days."

8 hours gives more than enough time to find a replacement. Giving a 1-2 hour notice, especially during rush periods, is pretty f***ed up and usually not enough if we have to call another restaurant to borrow somebody. I will say that the 8 hours does f*** over the people who work in the morning, but luckily they're given more leeway since you wake up sick at 6 and gotta work at 7-9, you didn't know you were gonna be sick.

IME, its doing a no-call, no show, that gets you fired.

I had food poisoning one day and I tried to call out...Boss wouldn't let me, so I spent 3/4 of my shift in the bathroom puking.

There's a hell of a lot of difference between not being paid to stay home Tuesday, and no longer having a job Wednesday.

What's with this "call out" s***? My whole life it has been called "called off"

I've literally never heard it as "call out" until this board.

You know what is useless and banal? Assuming that all fast food places are managed the same.
"Opinions should be a result of a thought, not a substitute for it."
When I worked at the local supermarket I hated their policy. You could only get a certain amount of absences due to health concerns, be it just calling in sick, or serious illness.

I first found out about that when I had a collapsed lung. It hurt whenever I inhaled and asked to leave early, and they asked me to work for another hour until someone else came in. I did so, then went to the nearby ER where I was informed I had pneumothorax and would be out for several days while I had this pump thing in my chest. They said it was fine and to just bring a doctor's note, so I assumed it was all good.

Later I had a collapsed lung again, and this time it needed surgery, so I would be out for a few weeks. Same thing, bring in a doctor note and it'll be fine. But when I got back after calling in sick for work a few months later, I was given a written warning for excessive absences. They listed the dates I was gone, and I was shocked to see that they included my days off in the hospital :<

It's like wow...sorry that a hole bust through my lung
