Staff at two McDonald’s branches will walk out today in a dispute over pay and conditions in what will be the first ever strike in the UK.

Workers at the branches in Cambridge and Crayford, in south-east London, are staging the strike in a row over the use of zero-hours contracts and ‘inexplicably’ low pay.

Jeremy Corbyn has offered his backing to the protest that the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union said would be well-supported. Amongst the workers’ demands are a £10 an hour starting salary and more secure working hours.

But McDonald’s said those taking action represented a small fraction of its workforce and that it was related to its internal grievance procedures. BFAWU national president Ian Hodson, speaking from the picket line in Cambridge, said members of the public were offering their support to the workers.

‘McDonald’s has had countless opportunities to resolve grievances by offering workers a fair wage and acceptable working conditions,’ he said.

‘For far too long, workers in fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s have had to deal with poor working conditions, drastic cuts to employee hours, and even bullying in the workplace – viewed by many as a punishment for joining a union.

Labour leader Corbyn added: ‘Our party offers support and solidarity to the brave McDonald’s workers, who are making history today. ‘They are standing up for workers’ rights by leading the first ever strike.

‘Their demands – an end to zero-hours contracts by the end of the year, union recognition and a £10 per hour minimum wage – are just and should be met.’

McDonald’s employs around 85,000 staff in the UK and one million worldwide.

It announced in April that workers would be offered a choice of flexible or fixed contracts with minimum guaranteed hours, saying that 86% have chosen to stay on flexible contracts.mDisturbing neo-Nazi stickers have started appearing in central London

A company spokesman said: ‘We can confirm that, following a ballot process, the BFAWU has indicated that a small number of our people representing less than 0.01% of our workforce are intending to strike in two of our 1,270 UK restaurants.

‘As per the terms of the ballot, the dispute is solely related to our internal grievance procedures and not concerning pay or contracts.

‘As announced in April this year, together with our franchisees, we are providing our people with the option of a guaranteed hour contract, and all restaurants will have these contracts in place by the end of 2017.

‘McDonald’s UK and its franchisees have delivered three pay rises since April 2016; this has increased the average hourly pay rate by 15%.We are proud of our people at McDonald’s, they are at the heart of all we do and we work hard to ensure that our teams are treated fairly. Our internal processes underpin that commitment.’

Around 40 workers will strike today and later attend a rally in Westminster

Workers aren't supposed to have rights, that's why they're workers.

You seem to think that a guy dropping fries does the same amount of work as a franchise owner.

Hint - they don't, and are paid accordingly.

they don't but it doesn't mean they can be screwed over on wages, rights and how they are treated

also CEO pay/bonuses is completely outrageous during the current time of mass redundancies, layoffs, restructuring where people have to do 2 or more roles and no wage growth

Aren't these people about to get replaced by robots?

Seems like good incentive for the robots.

I admittedly don't know the situation with fast food workers in Europe, but if it's anything like in America, there is literally no reason to pay a typical fast food worker £10 an hour.

i'm not totally against 0 hour contracts since it does suit some people who

but i'm aware that it screws over the majority of people who are on them

fast food workers are still people bro. they have to pay a mortgage/rent, look after their family and kids, pay car insurance, tax, petrol, etc

just because they're "dropping fries" doesn't make them any less of a person. and these are the people who need the most help, rather than getting shafted not only by their company but by society
